Feasibility Study Released

On September 19, 2019 an enthusiastic crowd of workers, retirees and community activists attended the release of an independent feasibility study of the possibility of using public ownership for electric vehicle manufacturing in Oshawa. The new facility would be anchored by orders for government fleets, such as for Canada Post.
The detailed study by consultant Russ Christianson showed that for an investment of $1.4 to $1.9 billion by the federal government there would be impressive benefits:
  • Over 13,000 jobs
  • Manufacturing and selling 150,000 battery electric vehicles in the first 5 years
  • Break-even point by year 4, profit in year 5
  • Decreasing CO2 emissions by 400,000 metric tonnes by year 5
Bringing support and solidarity were:
  • Rebecca Keetch, GM worker and member of Green Jobs Oshawa
  • James Hutt, Senior Manager - Programming, The Leap
  • John Lawrence, President, Canadian Union of Postal Workers, Oshawa Local
  • Scott Aquanno, Researcher in Economic Policy
  • Fred Hahn, President of CUPE Ontario (by video)
  • Sean Crawford, striking UAW member (by video from the picket line in Flint, Michigan)
Tiffany Balducci, President of the Durham Region Labour Council, did an amazing job of hosting the forum!
